Who's Buried Next To Charlie Parker?

So Nina and I were out and about on Saturday and on a whim, I took her to see Charlie Parker's grave. She'd never been and every Kansas Citian should make the pilgramage at least once.

We were surprised to see a very fresh grave without a tombstone next to his.

His mother is buried just to his right.

Who is in the grave to his left? Does anyone know?

  1. That is one hot mess. I cannot believe they'd leave a grave looking half-covered and half-filled like that.

    That is totally pathetic.

  2. I don't know who's buried there, but if I had to guess I'd say it's Funkhouser's political career.

  3. I fully expect to be corrected by a true jazz authority, but I believe that until 2009 a tree stood in that spot. That "grave" is actually a rotting stump.

  5. Satyavati - actually at a cemetery near me, they all look like that or worse shortly after burial. Can you imagine the angst of families who visit the graves soon after. Been there done that and it's gut wrenching.

  6. Damn! I was really hoping HIB had come up with the solution! But yeah, those photos Anony linked to are from 2007. No tree.

Also, very odd to find someone commemorating a lost tree with a bunch of flowers..or flower mulch, as it were. :/
