Now Do You Get It?

Kansas gets hit with an F5 tornado, the most violent weather phenomenon in the world. A mile wide twister with 300mph winds destroying everything in it's path. Also known as, The Finger Of God. Every uprooted item becoming a deadly projectile. An entire town completely destroyed.

Time to call up The Kansas National Guard. The "well regulated militia" described in the 2nd Amendment. Only they have the equipment and the organization to cope with a disaster of this magnitude.

Oops! Wait a minute...

"Sebelius expressed concern that rescue and recovery efforts were being further strained because much of the needed equipment has been sent to Iraq.

'When the troops get deployed, the equipment goes with them. So here in Kansas about 50 percent of our trucks are gone. We need trucks. We are missing Humvees, we're missing all kinds of equipment that could help us respond in this kind of emergency,' said Sebelius."

The citizens of Kansas can't rely on the Kansas National Guard for help because President Dubya has them deployed in Iraq fighting an unwinnable war against an enemy that didn't exist before we got there, for reasons that were fabricated to justify a pre-existing idealogical agenda.

Sorry, Greensburg, KS. Guess you'll just have to take the conservative Republican approach and pull yourselves up by your own bootstraps without whining and relying on help from the government. After all, it WAS an Act Of God.

Good luck and God Bless!

Well this is totally different than New Orleans. I mean after all, the people of NO were punished for their multitude of sins by an angry god. These people were just victims who were in the wrong place at the wrong time - unless it's a sin to live in KS.

I mean, you can tell that these things are totally different, right?

I will give the surrounding communities credit, they showed up with bus upon bus upon bus to evacuate these people. without being told by the guvmenth to do it. that did not happen in NO, they waited for the hand out when most people had weeks advance notice that this was coming. Sad all around.

I agree smedrock. It shouldn't be amazing that, when they haven't been bread into dependence, people can pull together to help each other out.

But it is.

Excellent work, XO. Reads a bit harsh, but harshness is required in this instance. I wonder how many others in Kansas will actually make that connection.

XO, don't be such a bleeding heart liberal. Why should we help our own people? You know it's more important for our National Homeland Security that we tyrannize the world in the name of American Capitalism.

Anyway, who cares about a bunch of rednecks from some little Kansas town? I'm sure they don't contribute a whole lot to the tax base. Those Hummers that got sent over probably represent ten times the town's GNP.

So just screw your head on right, will you?

No, I don't get it. Sebelius took this opportunity to plug her chances to become a big shot in the Democrat party governors association or whatever they call it.

We're missing 50% of our helicopters and hummers...well so what. What good are helicopters and hummers going to provide?

The President declared this a federal disaster zone...if she wants something, ask for it.

She's getting help from neighboring states like Nebraska. Why, pray tell, are they equipped and prepared to help our state when we're not?

This is political, period.

smed & emaw - look at the picture of the devastation. I applaud the surrounding communities for evacuating the citizens (which I understand took place in the middle of the night). But cleaning up the debris, bulldozing and rebuilding is a bit beyond the efforts of "neighbors banding together".

travel - As I understand things (and God knows I could be wrong), the National Guard is supposed to be under the authority of the Governors. It is the President who is supposed to ask for something if he needs it. The National Guard is the 2nd Amendments "well regulated" State Militia and the Governor of each state is, in essence, the Commander In Chief of that state's National Guard. Yes, they can be called into national service by the President in times of dire national need. But the state Governors should have adequate resources at their disposal to deal with issues such as this without having to go begging the President to please restore some of what you stole.

I thought about this post all day yesterday, and just got sadder and more bitter. Especially when it took fifty bucks to fill my gas tank. Helicopters can bring in supplies right? National guard can do all sorts of things that dont involve storm trooping right?

Nice going, Dubya.

crse - "Helicopters can bring in supplies right?" I heard that the Kansas National Guard was down to just 3 in-state helicopters. But luckily, Wichita, Kansas is actually an aviation capitol of sorts. Boeing, Cessna, Beachcraft. I think McConnel AFB is still active in some capacity. They will get supplies and help. But the traditional First Responders in situations of this magnitude are "otherwise engaged".
