I don't think you can walk in the shoes of someone who has lost everything material in this life. My heart goes out to all those in Kansas and Missouri who have lost it all. We work so hard, and then it's gone.
I learned a while back, though, that you can't take it with you when you leave this earth. Make the best of what you have while you can. Be thankful. And, help those who need. Offer them your shoes. For in the end, you won't need them.
