"Obama's not a Muslim...So Let's Attack His Christianity!"



I love how, in the introduction, Hannity throws out a casual comment supposedly made on another show by another person, completely without attribution, comparing Trinity United Church of Christ with the Branch Davidians, and then quickly moves on without any rebuttals as though what he has just said is a fact.

This is the Right Wing, AM Radio, and Fox Network's stock in trade. Hannity does it. O'Reilly does it. Limbaugh does it. It is as transparent as newly polished glass to anyone with a functioning nervous system.

The most commonly uttered phrase on all of these programs is "...but let's move on." Meaning 'I don't have to prove what I just said is true, we all know it's true, anyone who disagrees is an idiot' "...so let's move on."

The second most uttered phrase is "...I have to go." Which means 'You are making some very valid points which are backed up by actual FACTS which are taking away from my spin point, so I have to go in order to keep you from swaying any opinions with an argument that makes sense and is better than mine.'

Rev. Wright tries to communicate to Mr. Hannity that the views expressed in his church are steeped in the Black Value System and Liberation Theology.

The Rev. Wright also tried to inform Mr. Hannity about the concept of Liberation Theology and questioned Mr. Hannity's knowledge of the subject. Hannity dodged the subject and kept trying to interrupt because he didn't want to admit his ignorance. Hannity is a bigoted idiot.

"Liberation theology is a school of theology within Christianity, particularly in the Catholic Church. Liberation Theology focuses on Jesus Christ as not only the Redeemer but also the Liberator of the oppressed. It emphasizes the Christian mission to bring justice to the poor and oppressed, particularly through political activism. Some elements of certain liberation theologies have been rejected by the Catholic Church."

Some suburban, Lilly-white, Christians who have never attended a black church service may find some of the assertions disconcerting.

I can tell you that every black service that I have attended preaches these philosophy's with great, dramatic, over-the-top enthusiasm from the pulpit and are responded to by heartfelt congregational participation and accompanied by a loud and soulful soundtrack.

This is nothing new. This is how African Americans go to church. They have been doing this for a very long time.

This is only an issue for white folk who are used to going to quiet, non confrontational, reassuring, comforting services surrounded by lots of other white folk singing ancient songs that don't need drums or tambourines.

Widen your horizon's people and get a broader perspective of the world.

I just don't understand. What about these shows makes people not hate the hosts? What about using the word 'black' to describe your black community scares the conservative population? Why doesn't someone use their mind powers to blow Hannity's smirky little grin off his chubby stupid head?

I do not need to disparage my color to embrace another nor live in an urban area to understand the racial issues in this country. I have a biracial granddaughter who looks an awful lot like the Senator and her future depends on love, not hate. I want her to love herself and I want her to love me, her white grandmother as much as I love her. I don't want her to sit in church or anywhere else that preaches GODDAMN AMERICA. I don't want her to think that white America somehow invented the AIDS virus to destroy part of her heritage and I don't want her to think that we deserved to be attacked on 9-11 for any reason. And, I find no excuse, absolutely none, for Barack Obama raising his children in a church that shapes their minds with such lies and hatred.

I too have been to Black churches and was even a member of the same denomination of church that Obama attends for most of my youth and I never once heard that kind of speak. As a matter of fact, I don't see the kind of hateful rhetoric that Rev. Wright spits forth anywhere in the Black Value System or Liberation Theology.

So are you gonna change the name of your blog to "Hip Suburban White Guy, but it's Ok Cause I've been to Black Churches." ???

Much like Stephen Colbert I don't see color; therefore I solve the black church/white church debacle by not going to church -- not the point...

The point is -- a pastor says "Goddamn America" and we all want to shit ourselves in self-rightous patriotism -- well it seems to me that this country was founded on the principles of a bunch of people saying "Goddamn America" -- the quest to improve a society involves being open enough to criticize that same society. Imagine if John Adams or Thomas Jefferson had been afraid to criticize the government - we'd all be sitting around drinking tea with bad teeth like the rest of the British fucks.

Instead those men stood up and said, "Goddamn America" in the form of the following:

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

For those of you not keeping up -- that's Jeffersonian for Goddamn and Fuck you America - we think there's something better and you should too.

The sad part about the rhetoric of douches like Hannity is that the power and message of Obama's speech got lost --

Fact is this country has been fucking around with race issues for a bajiillion years and until blacks, whites, greens and others start to be open to understanding the world from different perspectives we'll never achieve improvement.

The real worry should not be a pastor who criticizes this country, but a country that condemns critics.

That's all I'm saying.

"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."

Good post XO. People need to understand that church in it's true context, and not just thru Faux News.

Many whites don't understand the worship of black congregations, liberation theology, charismatic services and the fact that in black churches it's the minister's (and choir's) job to move the congregation.

We are blessed with many similar congregations in town, one of 'em is even headed by a white guy - Sam Mann.

I'm not defending Wright's most extreme comments, I'm saying most white people don't know the full context of a congregant's situation.

I understand where you are coming from. I truly do.

I also wouldn't want my child or your grandchild to sit in a church and listen to Pastor John Hagee (whose endorsement John McCain actively sought, got, and has not renounced).

"Hagee also stated that Muslims have a "mandate" to kill Christians and Jews and that God caused Hurricane Katrina to destroy New Orleans to prevent a scheduled gay parade."

My youngest brother is gay. My sister is bisexual. Some of the finest people I know are gay. Some of my anonymous commentors have suggested that I may be gay. Or at least they instructed me to "suck it!"

I find Hagee's pronouncements to be ignorant, bigoted and offensive.

I find McCain's active pursuit of Hagee's endorsement, his acceptance of that endorsement, and his refusal to denounce Pastor Hagee's point of view to be abhorant.

There is no difference between Pastor Hagee and Kansas' own Fred Phelps.

Barack Obama denounced his own minister's statements in an incredibly profound and moving speech that conjured memories of John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King.

John McCain still has the endorsement of Pastor Hagee, who calls the Catholic Church "The Great Whore" and has not made a single statement denouncing Pastor Hagee or his statements.

Why?

Because he needs the Christian Right who have said they would sooner vote for Hillary than vote for McCain.

So he is willing to suckle up to a hate-mongering bigot like Hagee/Phelps if that is what it takes to get good, God-fearing, abortion hating Christians to vote for him.

Personally, I think the answer to all of this is for everyone to stay the fuck away from churches, ministers and people who let their "faith" overrule their "reason".

Societal decisions on how to govern and develop public policy need to be based on sound science and actual facts. Not on medieval superstitions, predjudices and racial bigotry.

That having been said...

You need to come to the next blog gathering travel! And bring your granddaughter! We'd love to meet her.

I thought you were going to be at the last one! What happened? And why the hell don't you have a blog of your own? You really should!
