The Palin Pregnancy and You

"I think, if anything, it shows the Republican Party is a real American party," said Rex Teter, another Texas delegate. "Every family has to deal with children, and sometimes children make decisions that parents wish they would not have been made, and things happen. But I think children are a blessing from God."

Sen. Barack Obama said firmly that the news should not have any bearing on the campaign for president.

"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."

I agree with all of the above.

That's why I think politicians, particularly Republicans, should stay the fuck out of people's bedrooms, stop persecuting gay people, quit preachifying about abstinence-only education (which obviously doesn't work!) and start giving their children actual FACTS.

I have direct, personal, knowledge of many strict, Christian, abstinence-only households that are dealing with unmarried teen pregnancies.

I don't know of a single atheist, fact-based household dealing with a pregnant teen. Not one. All the atheist families I know have straight A students who make good choices and stay out of trouble.

Living life and raising children based on truth, facts, trust and knowledge works.

Living life and raising children based on medieval fairy tales centered around an inherited maternal guilt from an apple-eating, snake-worshipping temptress results in sexually repressed children who explosively rebel against their upbringing with catastrophic results!

If you love your child, educate them and arm them with the truth.

Don't try to indoctrinate them into your fantasy world.

And don't you DARE try to pass legislation codifying your failed world view into laws that govern me.

Yes how interesting that now we are supposed to stay out of her private life when that has been republican stock and trade for god knows how long.

Good job, HSWG! I think you pretty well nailed it. Like the Alaskan sportsgod nailed her!

Somebody in the media called her, "doe-eyed". And no one's more innocent and naive than a good Christian girl who needs attention because her parents are too busy.

Did ya hear the caller on Limbaugh today saying McCain looks good with her? Well all old men look good standing next to a babe! Don't ya just want to go up to him and tell him he's got a good looking daughter, there?

Limbaugh thinks the drive bys want to destroy Palin. Not true. They just want Palin to do what she does best. Stay in Alaska! But try birth control.

You are right that we should teach the truth. So you don't know any atheist families whose children have problems? I sure do because we all do. That is the dumbest thing I've read from you.

The truth: sex is a wonderful thing enjoyed between people who are mature enough to understand the emotional issues that accompany it. Abstaining from it prevents pregnancy, STD's everytime. That is the truth. It is also true that even if we try to tell people the above some won't listen and will do it anyway. Do you think for second Bristol Palin didn't know about contraception?

You aren't hip. Go smoke some pot with your kids.

Amen brother. Well said.

I thinks the repukes are going to make a bigger deal out of trying to say the dems are making a big deal out it...err...something like that.

No. I really don't. It's an amazing thing...when you arm you children with actual facts instead of fantasies, they tend to be better equipped to deal with the real world. Go figure! Who could see that coming?

It's when children finally realize that their parents have been bullshitting and manipulating them their whole lives that they tend to have "problems".

I don't know about all the connotations you're drawing here. I was raised in a religious household and in religious schools and everydamnbody I knew was a birth control expert because hell would come up and manifest right in the livingroom should we turn up pregnant.

I don't necessarily think being an atheist has a lot to bear on this.

I think that if you choose to let your child be ignorant for whatever reason, whether it be that you don't want to talk about sex because it embarrasses you or because you entertain some personal delusion that if you don't say it, they won't do it, or because you think that just because you believe in waiting until marriage that they will also... then you're asking for trouble.

Plenty of religious people talk to their kids about sex and birth control and the consequences of one without the other. Don't make this necessarily a religious thing. Let's stick with that people who let their kids be ignorant are stupid regardless of their religious orientation or lack thereof.

And don't even try to tell me that all atheists are gung ho to get their girls on the pill, because that's just as bad as saying all Christians don't teach their kids about sex and won't let them use birth control. Every atheist on the planet is not a more highly intelligent, morally superior being to every religious one in the same way that every religious person is not an illiterate fanatic who believes that God hates fags. Making generalized statements like this to the tune that atheists are superior is the exact same as Christians making generalized statements that all non-Christians are going to hell. It's bullshit from either side.

If Miss Palin doesn't know what birth control is she must be living under the glacier, because there are advertisements on TV, in magazines, on the internet, and a whole variety of ribbed, lubricated, technicolour and flavoured condoms are right on the shelf in Walmart. She's pregnant because she's stupid, not because her family is religious. Don't make the one into the other. Give me a break.

Okay?

And my daughter was on the pill and still got pregnant. It does happen. The pill is not 100% effective. How does anyone know that Palin's daughter wasn't on the pill?

Hell manifesting itself in the living room does not constitute a fact-based birth control cirriculum. Education about the human reproductive cycle and the ability of a latex barrier to inhibit it, does.

"Don't make this necessarily a religious thing."

But it is the religous folks who insist on withholding facts from their children in favor of an "abstinence only" agenda that clearly does not, never has and never will work.

travel - I have no idea whether she was on the pill. Nonoe of my business.

Just like it is none of the government's business what people do in their bedrooms.

That's why it is legitimate news when a member of a political party that has, FOR DECADES, been campaigning for Big Government when it comes to morality and how individual people choose to conduct their lives gets exposed as being just as flawed and normal as those they would seek to prosecute and imprison.

One of my best friends got pregnant when she was 17, thanks to a condom breakage issue. She was raised in a religious home that wasn't ridiculously strict or overbearing in a moral way. Her parents were realistic about sex and what could happen with their teenage daughters. (They had 4 girls...my best friend is the second oldest.)

Both of my older sisters got pregnant while in high school. One was practicing the ever-so-popular (and dumb) "pull-out" method of BC. The other was just plain rebellious and stupid when it came to men, so Lord knows what she was using, if anything. My parents were never secretive or backasswards when teaching us about sex and its consequences. And we were very religious. Not to the extreme that you apparently believe all Christian households are, but we went to church every week, and on all holy days. Mom even became a part of that fanatic group that thought the world was gonna end in 2000. I know she's probly laughing at her folly from heaven now, but back then, she was very serious about it.

But she wasn't retarded when it came to what might happen with her daughters when it came to them getting into it with boys. She and dad fucked up with the first two, so she insisted that Twin and I let her know when we started having sex, so she could get us on the pill. I wound up with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) when I was 16, and the pill was the "cure", so I got lucky. (I didn't have sex until I was 18, and didn't have to have that "embarrassing" convo with my mom when I planned on doing it.) Twin was one of those teens that WANTED to get pregnant. There's no explaining those types...I don't get them at all.

I'm w/ Satyavati on this one. I think you're being awfully ridiculous in regards to this, and it's disappointing.
