The Elvis

Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977.

He was supposedly found dead on the crapper with his pajamas around his knees.

This Sunday will be the 32nd anniversary of his death.

I'm considering commemorating his passing by cranking up his Sun Records sessions and fixing one of the things that killed him.

I've done a little research and found a couple of different versions of Elvis' favorite sandwich.

There is the classic story of the Fool's Gold Loaf from The Mine Company restaurant in Denver.

It was basically a loaf of Italian bread, hollowed out and filled with peanut butter, jelly and bacon.

That sounds kind of...well, disgusting.

Then there was the grilled peanut butter and banana versions, with or without bacon.

Of the various versions, I think the grilled peanut butter and banana with bacon sounds the most Elvisish.

Seriously considering grilling up a batch of theses decadent fuckers on Sunday to mark the demise of the King of Rock and Roll.

I'm thinking you grill up all the bacon first. I lean towards thick cut, peppered bacon.

Then you make your peanut butter and banana sandwiches, layer in the bacon, and fry those fuckers up in the bacon grease.

Might even consider going all international and substituting plain old banana slices with fried plantains...also fried in the bacon grease. Ya know, for the calories.

So, if I decided to create some of these epicurean abominations this Sunday...who's in? Who will bring the Shatto milk to wash these belly bombers down?

Feedback on choice of bread? Plantains vs. Bananas? Jelly, no jelly? Brand of peanut butter? Crunchy vs. smooth? Bacon thin and crispy or thick and meaty? Hickory smoked or maple cured?

C'mon food bloggers! Weigh in on The Elvis!

I like crunchy peanut butter but with bananas I think smooth is the way to go. Bacon crisp & on the side not in the sandwich. I would be willing to try fried plantains on the sandwich but I think banana is traditional. I don't know about frying it in bacon grease.

Spyder - "Bacon crisp & on the side not in the sandwich"???

"I don't know about frying it in bacon grease."???

With all due respect, we are talking about The King's favorite sandwich!

You don't water that down. You don't throttle that back.

The King's motto was TCB! Taking Care of Business!

You don't TCB by putting the bacon on the side and frying the sandwich in canola oil!

That's the sort of thing Joe Esposito would do!

You have to go for the gold!

You got it right: french bread, pb&j and fried bacon. None of this plantain bullshit because they aren't sweet enough. I've celebrated Elvis' death day in one way or another for 15 years. I recommend a viewing of Clambake, Viva Las Vegas (Ann Margaret!) or Blue Hawaii.

TheDLC - Maybe I'll fix both versions. PB&J+Bacon loaf and Grilled PB&Banana+Bacon sammiches.

We can have a taste off to determine which is better.

If I decide to pull the trigger on this, you in?

LOL! I like my bacon uncompromised. And I have had PB & banana sandwiches when not celebrating Elvis', death or birthday. He & I are fellow Capricorns.

gotta agree with DLC, Ann Margaret in Viva Las Vegas was one hot looking gal.

I thought TCB stood for "Total Cholesterol Blockage."

Either way, I was with you up until you fried the bread in bacon grease. That would just make the bread soggy, no?

And what, no cheese?

I like fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and hell, I'd go for the bacon too. If you're making the sandwiches, I'll try one.

I'd skip the bacon grease simply for the soggy factor, but otherwise you're good to go. What's the drink fit for a King? You're going to have to wash that down with something....

XO I have a 5 year-old's birthday party to go to so I'm probably out. Is this what my life has become?

nothing make 5-year-olds happier than a bunch of bored adults sucking out the contents of their parents' bar.

Elvis will fly in from Vegas just to kick your ass if you use plantains instead of bananas.

Maybe I'll just hunt up an old recipe I got out of the KC Star years ago: "Elvis Presley's Favorite Poundcake".

It is quite good.
