Kansas City's Castle

Here are some pictures I took today of the old Vine Street Workhouse.

"It is referred to as the City Work House (or Vine Street Work House) and is located at 2001 Vine street. It is a former city prison building built in 1897 by architects Wallace Love and James Oliver Hogg. As described in the article, it utilized a steam fan system to provide ventilation."

Right across the street was the Street Department...

...and the Water Department.

  1. You know, what that photo reminds me of:

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.

    "Both very busy, sir."

"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to hear it."

  4. Keith Sader - 'Tis the Season! BTW, my favorite movie of the holiday season os Bill Murray's "Scrooged".

"Frank Cross: I want to see her nipples.

Censor Lady: But this is a CHRISTMAS show.

Frank Cross: Well, I'm sure Charles Dickens would have wanted to see her nipples.

Carpenter: You can barely see them nipples.

Frank Cross: See? And these guys are REALLY looking."

Now that's some holiday cheer right there.

  5. I love old buildings like these. I wish they were in use instead of sitting around all sad and empty.

  8. XO - you are welcome

    no charge.

Now that I have a digital camera - I'm getting pretty artistic with my pictures of the grandchildren.

The trick is to take a lot of shots and then edit and delete the ones that aren't good.

    you should try that

    :)
