Donnie Darko
Was flipping around on cable the other day and Donnie Darko had just started, so I watched it for the first time.
What
The
Fuck?
I kept waiting for the payoff. The big scene that would explain everything. Never happened! To explain why it didn't happen I would have to post spoilers for those few people who still haven't seen it. Sort of a "2001: Space Odyssey", it means whatever you want it to mean vibe.
The only reason I ever started watching it in the first place, let alone finish watching it, was that the actor who played Donnie's father (Holmes Osborne), was my 8th grade English teacher.
How many of YOUR school teachers later showed up in weird fucking cult classic movies? Huh?

I really liked this movie to, although I agree with you that it was trying to be a little too clever (I think it was David St. Hubbins who said "There's a very fine line between clever and stupid.")
I was trying to remember... Didn't Osborne play the dad in The Wonders as well?
If by that you mean the movie "That Thing You Do!", then yes. He did play the dad on that.
He and Tom Hanks go way back and Holmes guilt-tripped Hanks into living up to some drunken promise they made to each other in their drug-hazed past to help each other get ahead in the business.
Or at least that's what I read on the internets (so it MUST be true).
