Welcome, Senator Al Franken

Conservatives have their panties in a twist over the fact that former SNL Comedian and author Al Franken managed to win a senate race in the same state that elected former professional wrestler and actor Jesse Ventura governor!

Let us not forget that the people criticizing Al Franken are the same folks who think that a B-movie actor who played 2nd fiddle to a trained chimp...

...who appeared in the most gay-cowboy-fetish (not that there's anything wrong with that) costume EVER...

...was the GREATEST PRESIDENT in the history of America!

If Ronald Reagan can be President of the United States...

...and The Terminator can be Governor of California,...

then Al Franken can be the junior Senator from Minnesota.

So shut the fuck up.

All of that may be true but it doesn't make it right.

And Al Franken was never a comedian. In order for you to be a comedian you have to be funny. He was not.

I just think it's cool that Franken got elected via the George W. Bush method (i.e., getting a court to appoint you the winner).

Wait...who cares about Al Franken getting appointed the Senator seat? You didn't link to anything, so is it even true?

I couldn't give a rat's ass if he's finally "won" that race. I know I'm a pretty weak example of the conservative party, but I haven't exactly seen any uproar over this on any of the news sites/channels I peruse now and again. I must've missed something...

faith - In addition to appearing on the blatantly liberally biased SNL, Franken also wrote books with titles like "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot" and "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right".

So The Right a) Doesn't take him seriously because he was on SNL and b) Hate him him because he's smart, liberal, and can write well.

But the final straw is that he Dems now have a Super Majority. An opposing party can declare a filibuster to block legislation.

"I wonder how many Americans understand that you can't pass legislation in America with 50% of the votes in Congress? How many of them understand that, outside of budget resolutions, you need 60 votes in the Senate? That a filibuster isn't a matter of Jimmy Stewart talking himself ragged for hours on end, but of merely declaring an intention to filibuster? And that this is done for all but the most routine matters? With the result that the 60-vote minimum is no longer reserved for occasional high-profile issues, but has been institutionalized for virtually all legislation of any consequence?"

Al Franken is #60.

The Democrats can now do whatever they want. The Republicans are virtually powerless. They don't even have nuclear option. They got nuthin.

Why? Because that's how the American people voted. They don't want the Republicans to have a say in policy anymore.

Been there, done that, over it.

No, I know all that. The bit about him being #60, and having been a past SNL cast member and shit is all in the stories posted online about him finally "winning" the position and everything. (And really, you'd have to live under a rock to not know about the books he's written and his past with SNL. That ain't news to anyone, I'd think. I could be wrong, of course. ::shrugs::)

What I was wondering was where you're seeing how the "conservatives have their panties in a twist" and stuff. I try not to watch Fox & Friends when it's blatantly displayed at the gym on every other television (I really need to call and talk to a manager about that), but I have to say that yesterday while I was on the treadmill, I didn't see them utter one word about this issue in any of the times I glanced in the direction of their program. (It's like a train wreck, in certain ways...it's hard to take your eyes away from it when it's right there in front of you!) And you'd think they would be the ones with their panties twisted, if anyone would be.

Maybe you're referring to conservative bloggers? I don't read that mumbo-jumbo, so I dunno. The fact that you just linked to info about Al Franken being a former SNL actor and an author of very liberally minded material just made me wonder why you didn't link to any evidence of panty-twisting. It was odd, I thought. Like maybe you were making it up. (Although, I know some conservatives out there must be a bit outspoken about their disappointment in the situation...I'm sure it must exist somewhere. I just haven't seen it, and when someone says it's happening, I expect some kind of back-up to that claim. Especially when it's you...you're usually so link-happy!)

emaw - "...Franken got elected via the George W. Bush method (i.e., getting a court to appoint you the winner)."

Not exactly.

You see, there is one very important difference.

Franken actually WON THE ELECTION BY GETTING MORE VOTES THAN COLEMAN.

Franken got 1,212,629 votes, Coleman came up shy at 1,212,317.

Bush, on the other hand, only got 50,456,002 votes while Al Gore, the person that the citizens of the United States actually wanted to be president, got 50,999,897 votes.

For Franken to have gone to the Senate via the Bush Method, he would had to LOOSE the election AND THEN have a court appoint him the winner.

Totally not what happened.

He's good enough. He's smart enough. And doggonit, somebody likes him. (Just enough, at least.)
