Best Break Up Songs - EVER

Let me preface this by stating emphatically that there are no break ups going on over here. Everything is incredibly cool in XOland.

But, we've all been through break ups before and there are often musical triggers associated with those events.

Here are three of my favorite "fuck you bitch!" songs.

You're Breaking My Heart - Harry Nilsson
(don't know why the video has all the homo-erotic images, but it was the only quality clip I could find. If you're gay - enjoy. My treat. If you're not - close your eyes and listen.)

Whipping Post - The Allman Brothers
Again - not the best video. A bunch of scanned album art. Ignore the visuals, listen to the pain in the song. This is some pissed-off, soul-hurtin' blues sung by a dead guy!

I Will Never Be Your Fool - David Bromberg
Maybe the crappiest video of the bunch. Looks like it was filmed on a cell phone duct-taped to a tent pole. Except they didn't have cell phones back in 1985. But despite the quality of the video, Mr. Bromberg is quite adamant about not being that bitches fool again. Ever.

Those are my choices.

What are your nominations for the best break up songs?

BTW, just so we don't end this post on a "downer", we all know that the break up is invariably followed by a period of liberation, experimentation and downright promiscuity. As exemplified by this little ditty:

GOD I love that song!

1) Good song. For some reason I can't stop watching that video...

2) David Bromberg! Whatever happened to David Bromberg? amazon.com here I come..

3) That's just wrong. Thanks for your part in guaranteeing an erection-free July. Ack!

Damn. I thought I had nightmares before...

EDIT: Sorry - I know this is bad form but I neglected to comment on the Allman prophecy.

Timeless, iconic genius. That's all.

stink - David Bromberg has retired from performing and now makes handcrafted violins.

Or so I've heard.

Would you count "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"? It's kind of a breakup song, in a very permanent fashion.

Okay, first of all, that was NOT homo-erotic; you got me all excited for nothin'. You want homoerotic? I got your homoerotic right here.

My favorite break-up song would have to be "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette. Because she's calling in the middle of dinner, and every time she scratches her nails down someone else's back, she hopes you feel it ... and that's just cold.

Okay, you know I'm the last person in the western hemisphere with a dialup connexion so I couldn't watch the videos. And I never really had breakups that were angry on my part (more like just running away and hoping I don't get caught)... but all that aside here are a couple of suggestions.

1. Can't You See by the Marshall Tucker Band. This is probably as 'southern' as my taste for 'southern rock' gets, but this is a great song.

2. Shaking The Tree by Peter Gabriel. This is more like a post-breakup liberation song, I think.

Of ALL songs I've ever heard the most evil, angry, betrayed, naked raw still bleeding pain had to be I'll Get Even by Megadeth. The first time I heard it, I said to my husband, jeez, if I knew I was the person this song was written about, I'd be scared shitless. It's that intense.

Actually, Megadeth is a real good band for when you're pissed off; Dave Mustaine plays with more hate and anger than anyone I've ever seen. It's not an approach for everyone, but it sure does have its place, and he does it absolutely.

Just my two paisa.

Whenever this topic comes up I think of Chet Baker's The Thrill is Gone (no YouTube link, sorry), and Meatloaf's Two Out of Three Ain't Bad.

I've always been partial to John Waite's Missing You. Because I'm a sap. Special bonus link: The Alison Krauss cover (featuring an amazingly well preserved JW).

"The Memory of You" by Indigo Swing. They're a swing band that put out a couple of CD's during the neo-swing revival a few years ago.

My vote goes to "99 Problems and a Bitch Ain't One" by Jay-Z.

Im totally on board with the Alanis Morrisette song. My husband and I really enjoy screaming that one at the top of our lungs when we hear it. I also like "Black" by pearljam. Its totally self-indulgently morose.
