Kansas City's Glamorous Motel Capri!
I drive by this place everyday. It sits at Paseo Blvd and Independence Ave.
This where, in the summer of 2003, police found a decomposing corpse under one of the beds after a resident, who stayed for 3 nights, complained of the smell. KMBC filed this report:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man's body was discovered stuffed under a mattress at a local motel Sunday.

Police said that the man appeared to have been dead for some time, but the body went unnoticed until a guest staying the room could no longer tolerate the smell.
Officers were called to the Capri Motel in the 1400 block of Independence Avenue around noon Sunday after cleaning crews made the grisly discovery.
"I asked them what was going on and they said they found a body in one of the rooms," said Dennis Shultz, a guest at the motel.
KMBC's Emily Aylward reported that the man who checked into the motel room a few days ago complained to management about the odor two times over the three days. He then checked out on Sunday because he could not tolerate the smell.
Police said that the cleaning staff lifted up the mattress in the room and found the body. Detectives said that the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition and had apparently been there for several days.
"If you say someone is dead for a few days, how could someone staying there not tell or smell or know something was wrong?" Shultz said.
Police suspect that the wooden panels on the side of the bed prevented someone from discovering the body earlier.

The part that I love best about this story is the guy complained to the manager several times about the smell and was told "there is nothing we can do."

That's right. All of our rooms smell like dead, bloated, rotting, decomposing maggot-filled corpses. There's nothing we can do about it.
And the guy stayed there for three days before he couldn't take it anymore! Makes you wonder what standard of hygeine the guy was used to back home. I don't think that bar was set very high.
I was able to locate this review on tripadvisor.com from a traveller who actually stayed there in Feb of 2008.
"CRACK MOTEL - Prostitutes at 9 am showing up with a 12pk beer. CrackHead tried to enter the room and "hook us up" with cheap soda. Filthy sheets and bathroom. If we had a way to leave we would have."
With reviews like that, you better get your reservations in early!
And when you make those reservations, make sure to ask for a room with a Jacuzzi and a whirlpool bath!
I'm sure it's clean as a whistle!

My (then future) husband and I lived up in the Northeast for about 4 years and every time we drove by the Capri we always thought that it was either:
A. a flophouse for the homeless that scored extra cash that day...
B. a crack house...
C. A place dead hookers would be found on a regular basis.
I remember the story from 2003 and not being suprised.
It kind of makes you wonder about the housekeeping staff though...no mints on the pillows, but dead bodies between the mattresses!

I used to go past that place to grab some lunch, and it had a seriously skeevy vibe.
A friend told me that the whores would leave their stuff in their room and upsell their first trick to pay for the days room fee. I always assumed it was local gossip and not first hand experience that garnered him that knowledge.

Stayed at the Capri for a week until my apartment got approved. I had all kinds of people asking if I stayed there alone ( sketchy) not to mention this big black dude kept yelling to himself in the parking lot. He was on pcp or something. Then a another young black man would knock on my door between the hours of 3:00 am and 6:00am. Also heard gunshots across the street my first night. I called the cops reporting a shots fired. About 10 minutes later a helicopter with a spotlight (1:00am) and one single police car drove around the block like 6 times then left. Very creepy sketchy and scary. Bring a gun with you
